I Really Enjoyed That Sermon...

  • “Good job.”
    • We certainly appreciate compliments and encouragement
    • But that’s not why we do it…
  • Why do we preach?
  • Preaching was never meant as a form of entertainment, and its purpose is not to provide enjoyment to audience.
    • Focus is to impact hearts.
    • 2 Tim. 4:2 (convince, rebuke, encourage, with utmost patience in teaching)
    • 1 Tim. 4:13
    • Tit. 2:15
  • Different elements of preaching
    • Convince – Cause someone to believe firmly in the truth of something
    • Rebuke – Express sharp disapproval or criticism of someone because of their behavior or actions
    • Encourage – Give support, confidence, hope
    • Exhort – Strongly encourage or urge someone to do something
  • Acts 2
    • v. 14 – exhort
    • v. 16-35 – convince
    • v. 36 – rebuke
    • v. 39-40 - exhort
  • Acts 7
    • v. 51 – rebuke
  • Acts 17
    • v. 22 – encourage
    • v. 23-29 – convince
    • v. 30-31 – exhort
  • 3 sermons—3 different reactions
    • Athenians came closest to “enjoying” a sermon
    • Our preaching should demonstrate these elements & be like 2 Tim. 3:16, based in scripture and profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness, so that we are equipped for every good work.
    • Instead of praying for a “ready recollection”, let’s pray that our preaching is what we need to hear to improve, benefitting us all, and converting the lost.
