Speaking the Truth in Love

Jesus Answers His Apostles (John 13-16)

John 13:6 – Peter asks, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”

Answer – John 13:7-17 – Yes He was washing their feet and teaching them an important lesson about serving one another.

John 13:25 – John asks, “Lord, who is it?”

Answer – John 13:26-35 – Jesus shows that one of his apostles will betray Him, then Judas departs.

John 13:36 – Peter asks, “Lord, where are you going?” and “Lord, why can I not follow You know?”

Answer – John 13:37-14:4 – Jesus tells that where He is going they cannot follow Him now, but they shall follow Him later. He also tells them of preparations He will make for them and that He will come again and receive them.

John 14:5 – Thomas asks, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?“

Answer – John 14:6-21 – Jesus indicates that He is the way, the truth, and the life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Jesus also reveals to them that they will do greater works than they have witnessed. He also comforts them by assuring them their requests will be answered by Him. He also will send the Helper, the Spirit of truth, the Comforter who will abide with them forever. The final part of the Master’s answer is that, “He who has my commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves me.”

John 14:22 – Judas (not Iscariot) asks, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

Answer – John 14:23-31 – Jesus teaches that those who truly love Him, will keep His word, and then He and the Father will love and make their home with him. Those who do not love Him, will not keep His word, and therefore will not have Him and the Father making their home with him. He also tells them again about the Helper, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who will teach them all things, and bring to remembrance all things that He said to them.

John 16:17 – Some of His disciples ask, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?”

Answer – John 16:18-30 – Jesus tells them that they will weep and lament (referring to His crucifixion) and then their weeping will be turned to joy (referring to His resurrection). He then tells them, “for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.”

Jesus now asks them and all of us a very important question. In John 16:31, Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?”

Notice what Jesus says in John 16:32-33“Indeed the hour is coming, yes, and now come, that you will be scattered, each to His own, and will leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Let us also look at Romans 8:37Revelation 3:21, and 1 John 5:1-5.

Do you want to overcome sin and Satan? Do you want to see Jesus in Heaven? Do you want to live forever? Why not believe in Him, submit to Him, and obey His commandments like His apostles did. Then He will wash your sins away, He will make His home with you, and then you can look forward to eternal life in Heaven. We hope to see you next time on “Speaking the Truth in Love”.
