Speaking the Truth in Love

Speaking the Truth in Love

Lessons from the Book of James

The book of James is only five chapters, but is full of powerful teaching for the child of God. James may be one of the earliest books written in the New Testament, maybe around 45 AD. It is thought by most scholars to have been written by James, the Lord’s brother. This thought has always been encouraging to me, as I realize that at one time James was not a believer (John 7:1-5). The influence of Jesus eventually had an impact on James and others in the Lord’s physical family (Acts 1:12-14, 12:1715:131 Corinthians 9:5, and Galatians 1:19). Tonight we would like to study some lessons that we can learn from this great book of the Bible.

1. Trials are a good thing for the child of God (James 1:2-4, 12)

2. Think before you speak (James 1:19-20)

3. Be hearers and doers (James 1:21-27)

4. Children of God are justified by faith and works (James 2:14-26)

5. The peace of God versus the selfishness of the world (James 3:13-18)

6. Friendship with the world is against God (James 4:1-10)

7. Tomorrow is not guaranteed (James 4:13-15)

8. The patient and enduring will be rewarded (James 5:7-11)

9. Christians are not to swear or take oaths (James 5:12)

10. There is power in prayer (James 5:13-18)

11. Christians can fall away and be brought back (James 5:19-20)

We hope these great lessons from the book of James have encouraged you to do God’s Will. Why not decide tonight to obey the Lord and become a Christian? One who not only hears the Word, but one who becomes a doer of the Word! Obeying the Lord is the only way to save your soul for eternity (John 14:614:15). We hope to see you next time on “Speaking the Truth in Love”!
