Acts 8 - Philip

Philip – Acts Chapter 8

Acts 7 – As Logan preached recently, even though Stephen is aware of the potential danger, he chooses to do the right thing and tell the people what they need to hear. In doing so he is stoned.

This type of event would have stopped many people from continuing to spread the gospel. But we actually see the opposite happen in Acts 8.

  • Disciples go everywhere preaching the Word
  • Philip was one of the 7 from Acts 6 (Acts 21:8)
  • Philip goes to the Samaritans (Acts 1:7-8, John 4)
  • Preached Christ
  • Multitudes listened, believed, and obeyed in baptism
  • Simon is tempted – Peter and John – Do not hesitate in telling him what he needs to do – True compassion includes the truth
  • Peter and John continue preaching in Samaritan villages on their way back to Jerusalem
  • The Angel of the Lord tells Philip to go to Gaza where he overtakes the Ethiopian Eunuch’s chariot
  • From Isaiah Philip preaches Jesus to the Eunuch
  • The Eunuch listens to the message, believes the message, and then obeys the message
  • There is urgency once one realizes what they need to do. Immediately the chariot is stopped!
  • The Eunuch, after obeying in baptism, comes up rejoicing – he may have brought the gospel of Jesus to many in Ethiopia
  • Philip goes to Azotus (Ashdod) and preached in all the cities as he moves up the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea.
  • Here it seems Philip stayed in Caesarea and is referred to as Philip the Evangelist (used only 3 times in the New Testament) (Acts 21:8) – the last reference to Philip

Many today have faith and believe:

James 2:19-20

Acts 26:27-29

Romans 5:1-2

Jesus has given all people access to the grace of God!

Bible faith is an obedient faith. Obeying does not mean we have earned anything (Luke 17:10)

Maybe you believe but have not yet obeyed this morning? Why not be like the Samaritans and the Ethiopian Eunuch and obey so you can have your sins washed away?

Maybe you are here today and you have believed & obeyed? But you are struggling to do the right thing at times. Many you have given into the temptations of the world, or your own desires, or friends, or family have tempted you do not do the right thing. This morning we can encourage you and pray for you that you will do the right thing like Stephen did, like the early disciples did in Acts 8:4, and like Philip did.

Trust and Obey
