Print Version Are You Circumcised Of Heart?
Sermon notes for Sunday, July 18, 2010
Notes written by Murray Wade

Jeremiah 9:26, Romans 2:28
Circumcision was a sign that the Israelites were sanctified and set apart to serve God.

What describes one who is circumcised of heart? They are:

1. Sincere and honest about themselves like Paul (1 Timothy 1:5, 12-17)

2. Seeking the Lord first like the Bereans (Matthew 6:33, Acts 17:11)

3. Putting the needs of others before their own like Jesus (Philippians 2:1-4, 1 Peter 2:21-25)

4. Shining the light of Jesus wherever they may be like Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:2, 24-28, Romans 16:3-5, 1 Corinthians 16:19)

5. Humble and contrite when they fall to sin like Ahab and the tax collector (1 Kings 21:25-29, Luke 18:13-14)

Are you circumcised of heart this morning? Romans 12:1-2 summarizes what God expects of our hearts.

  • If you are not a child of God, the first step for you is to become a Christian so your heart can be cleansed and sanctified (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). You need to repent of your sins and be washed in baptism like the Corinthians were.
  • Then we all need to diligently guard our hearts (Philippians 4:5-7). This involves being careful about what gets in our hearts and what stays in our hearts (1 John 2:15-17). Satan uses the world to try to get evil into our hearts. We have some young families with wonderful parents who are diligently trying to guard the hearts of their children. When my kids were small and I was concerned about what they watched and heard, I realized if something was not fit for them to watch or listen to, I had no business watching or listening to it!
  • We want to have circumcised hearts so we can see God (Matthew 5:8)!

If we can help you now, please come forward as we stand and sing!
