Print Version Overcoming The Fear Of Man
Sermon notes for Sunday, October 26, 2008
Notes written by Murray Wade

Jesus and Peter Walking on the water – focus on Jesus (Matthew 14:22-33)

Apostles – all fled when Jesus was arrested (Mark 14:50).

Peter – with John – forsook the Lord (John 18:15-27).

On the day of Pentecost Peter and the eleven had overcome their fears (Acts 2:14).

All the apostles are now willing to risk their lives. They have transformed from fearful men to fearless men (Acts 3-5).

It seems they began to overcome their fears the day they saw the Lord ascend to Heaven (Luke 24:50-43, Acts 1:9-14).

Even after this Peter again gives in to the fear of man in Galatians 2. Paul then confronts him and teaching him a better way (Galatians 2:11-21).

When we realize that there is really nothing that man can do to us to hurt us, we can be more willing to set the example we ought to (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

When we do not fear man, we will also be more willing to teach the lost around us (James 5:19-20, Jude 22-23)! And that is something we all have in common. We all interact with precious souls who are lost everyday. What we need is to overcome our fears so we can reach out to them with the gospel of Jesus!

Look at these scriptures:

  • Psalm 27:1, 118:6
  • Romans 8:31-39
  • Hebrews 13:6
  • Philippians 4:13
  • Matthew 10:28

Good instruction from God’s Word on how to overcome the fear of man.

  • We owe it to the Lord to shine for Him!
  • We owe it to our brethren to help them get to Heaven!
  • We owe it to the lost in the world to try to save them!
  • With God on our side, we have no one to fear!

I have known many who have had to overcome fears to become Christians. Just remember a Christian has God on his side (2 Chronicles 32:7-8Hezekiah knew this that God was on His side).

If you are in sin - you need to realize that God is not on your side. He is the one we all need to fear and respect. Why not take care of any sin you have right now? If you are not a Christian, you can repent of your sins and be baptized now. If you are a Christian and have been letting the fear of man keep you from doing what God expects of you, you can repent of that and pray for forgiveness now. If we can help you now, please let us know while we stand and sing!
