Sermon notes for Sunday, October 05, 2008
Notes written by Murray Wade

This past summer I had started a series of lessons titled “Good Things Happen To Good People”, “Bad Things Happen To Good People”, and “Good Things Happen To Bad People”. Recently we received an e-mail request from a brother in Medford, Oregon who had been using these lessons in some home Bible studies and had one request. That request was to “complete the series” with a lesson on “Bad Things Happen To Bad People”. We truly appreciate our brother’s diligence in teaching the gospel and want to help in any way we can. So this morning we will talk about how Bad Things Happen To Bad People. I have already provided the notes to our brother in Oregon.

Examples of Bad Things Happening to Bad People in the Old Testament

  • Jezebel (1 Kings 21:23-25, 2 Kings 9:10, 30-37)
  • Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:16-21)

Examples of Bad Things Happening to Bad People in the New Testament

  • Herod (Acts 12:20-24)
  • The Rich Man (Luke 16:19-31)

Manasseh Gives Us All Hope

  • Manasseh misleads Judah in a very bad way (2 Chronicles 33:1-10)
  • Manasseh has something very bad happen to him (2 Chronicles 33:11)
  • Manasseh humbles himself before God (2 Chronicles 33:12)
  • God hears Manasseh and restores him as King (2 Chronicles 33:13-17)

We see from the Romans 3:23 and 5:6-8 that all men are bad and if we do not turn away (repent; about face, forward, march!) from our sins we will all perish (Luke 13:3-5). After death the bad have no more chances (notice Luke 16:27-31).

You see without Jesus “Bad Things Happen To Bad People”. But with Jesus, a bad person can be made better than good; pure and white as snow! Notice:

·         1 Corinthians 6:9-11

·         1 Timothy 5:22

·         James 3:17

·         Revelation 7:13-17

·         Romans 6:23

Whether you want to follow Jesus is up to you. Do you want to remain bad and one day be rewarded with eternal destruction? Or do you want to repent of your sins and then have them washed away in baptism so you can become good for the Lord (Acts 2:38, 22:16)? Please read Song 766, “Whiter Than Snow”. This song is based on Psalm 51:7-11 when David longed to be washed of his sins and be pure and good in God's sight. Is this something that you want? Let us know how we can help you as we stand and sing.
